The Story

Hello, My Name is Nadhirah Maisarah binti Nazri Mawi. I am a Malaysian Youth Volunteer under AIESEC. PAWsitive Light Project is a one-month long initiative focused on animal volunteerism.

Our volunteering journey put a big emphasis on nocturnal mammals. Nocturnal mammals are animals that are primarily active during the night and sleep during the day. These animals have evolved various adaptations that allow them to thrive in low light conditions and take advantage of the resources available at night. One of them is called Sunda colugo, or "flying lemur". Though found in most forest habitats of Southeast Asia, and most everywhere including farms and in roadside gardens, there was so much missing data about them. According to Langkawi-based naturalist Irshad Mobarak, “No zoo in the world has successfully reared them in captivity.” 

Hence, there remains a lot of concern about the threats posed to colugos in Malaysia, a country where deforestation remains a real issue. The missing information also highlights the challenges of studying and understanding certain species, especially those that are not commonly studied or are elusive. You can contribute to this cause by addressing these issues and protecting more nocturnal mammals  like the Sunda colugo. Such efforts include habitat preservation and community engagement.
