Hopeful Hearts: Stop Wasting, Start Feeding

The Story

I am An-Nur Qkharishma, a Malaysian Youth Volunteer from AIESEC Universiti Putra Malaysia. As a biotechnology student, I have been frankly aware of the food waste issue hence why I have decided do join my current project called Clean Our Plate. Do not let the simple name fool you as a spoon of food surplus a day may lead to a heap of waste in landfills around the country. So here I am, dedicating myself to spread awareness even to one soul for us and the environment.

In a review from the International Food Research Journal (2016), the amount of food waste is increasing at an alarming rate annually. The handling and treatment of food waste presents the authority with significant difficulties. Due to its poor separation from municipal solid trash and the contribution it made to the creation of greenhouse gases in landfills, food waste contributes to the current environmental problem. Other than that, it poses a problem to the homeless community too. While we have the luxury to waste food, the needy are facing food poverty. Research and innovations to reduce food loss and improve food distribution play a crucial role in addressing both issues.

The best solution would be to promote awareness amongst the public which is where the fundraising comes into play. We will spread word on the effects to generating excess amounts of food waste & how to combat it. While the donated amount will be flowed through our partner The Assembly Soup Kitchen (TASK) that uses the donation to distribute food in the homeless community. This essentially kills two birds with one stone.
