My name is Atikah binti Abd Rohim. I am Year 2 student, studying in Arts with Education ( School of Educational Studies) . I am from Kedah but I studies in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. I am an active girl since I was in high school. I really like to explore new things and travelling. My university’s life helps me a lot to develop my personal skills. I found my passion in volunteering work when I was a freshman. I tried to explore my potential and confidence level to speak English with others. I have joined many activities that can help improving my English proficiency.
One day, I walked through dk foyer (hall) and somebody approached me. She told me about AIESEC and what AIESEC do. I searched through website that was given by her and Facebook page and I think that was a great opportunity for me to do global volunteer while travelling to other country. So. I grab that challenge and my journey began as AIESEC exchange participant in Taiwan.
Currently, I am AIESEC member in Penang and is running Speak Up project . Why I choose volunteering work? I believe that I can contribute to society and bring a real impact to them by being a volunteer and organizing a project.
The main purpose of this campaign is to create awareness of English proficiency among youth while integrating STEM knowledge in education. I want to help youth to build their self-confidence in English proficiency and implement STEM in their daily life.
As we know, lack of confidence and shyness are some of fears in speaking English. People tend to speak in their own native language rather than speak in English. Why this happened?. This is because they are not practicing English in their daily life. This fear become a serious problem when they are in university and applying for a job because most recruiters will recruit people who are excellence in English proficiency. I just realize that people are not confidence to speak English because they are afraid making grammar mistake. It also happened to me when I am trying to speak English with people for the first time. However, I gain confidence to speak English through my global volunteer journey in Taiwan. It is really difficult for me during my first few weeks but after I end my journey, I gain the confidence. Why? I realize as long as I can interact with others and people can understand the message that I want to deliver, so, that will be fine. People will be more focusing to the message that I want to deliver rather than my grammae because it is a communication. Message is more important that grammar. So, I think this project is a great platform to build youth soft skill in term of English communication and become a problem solver through STEM.
Amidst of Covid-19, everybody is going through difficult phase where we are working in uncertainty. However, we cannot stop education to be runned because education is key for community development. We want youth to use this time to build their soft-skill and improve themselves by learning new things through virtual platform and through Speak Up project. Some people might wonder how they can contribute to society. So, this campaign is a great opportunity for us to bring a high impact to society by funding to this project. This is our responsibilty to create a better generation.
