Small Actions Can Have Big and Lasting Impact!

The Story

Do you know 3,500,000 students in Malaysia do not meet the minimum English proficiency required from secondary school graduates? Do you often think about the underprivileged children who do not have the opportunity to learn English?

Before answering the questions above let me have a quick introduction of myself. I’m curently a first-year student in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), pursuing Bachelor’s Degree of Quantity Surveying. I’m holding the position of Vice President of Incoming Global Volunteer in AIESEC in Penang, therefore organizing this fundraising event to support our AIESEC National Project i.e. Speak Up!. Speak Up is a project which aims to increase the English proficiency and confidence level among local students. This project is also aligned with 4th SDG Goal-Quality Education. 

I am fundraising for this peoject because i really feel that the project is able to help the youth to to take the steps by themselves to speak out their voices. Most importantly, the project is with an aim to ensure quality of education is not restricted by good schools, races and others. This could be achieved by having a creative way of delivering the knowledge. 

Lastly, I'm going share about the impacts of Speak Up projects run in Malaysia. Speak Up has been reached more than 800 Global Volunteers, 160 Secondary Schools, and 2,200 Secondary Students. More than 83% of these stakeholders have ranked our project with a score of 8 out of 10, and more than 76% of the Secondary Students have ranked themselves more confident in using English for daily interaction with peers (7 out of 10), some of them even become the Committee of the Toastmaster Club which reveals that what Speak Up brings to them is not just about short-term change but a long-term impact.
