Hi, I'm Ashley and one of my hobbies is reading novels. As my mom was an English teacher, I grew up being encouraged to read a lot, getting into Percy Jackson and The Hunger Games in primary school and making it a point to buy one English novel per month when I was in secondary school. Although reading took more time than watching movies, I was attracted to the way different authors described scenes and experiences that made me feel like I was there and wanting to know more.
In July 2019, I volunteered to help out with a project organised by AIESEC in Penang where they organised workshops to boost the confidence of secondary school students to speak English. That time, I got to talk to a few students, and I realised that they were eager to learn English - they even watched English films and played games that had English as the main language - but because they were not actively encouraged to use it outside of school, it meant they had to opportunity to use the language at all.
Therefore, I am encouraging anyone who has a passion for the English language, whether it was your first language or a second one you're learning out of interest, if you want to give secondary school students in Penang a chance to learn better English, donate to this fundraiser so we can continue organising better projects to give them more opportunities to learn!
With just a little contribution, these students can widen their communication skills with one more language they can use fluently, and gain the confidence to speak a new language.
