The Fourth Industrial Revolution: Velocity, Scope, and Impact

by ELSA FALLIDA BINTI MOHD SUBAL

Let me share you a story of my curiosity journey that leads me to find out more about this dynamic technology disruption embedding new fusion of various top notch technology systems. When I was trying to search for the latest drama series I came across with this title of a drama series from China entitled ‘Nothing but Thirty” .It was just like any other drama series with full of a synopsis that focuses on friendship, hope and some adventures in life .But, I was so intrigue when I watched the part where the director integrated the scene of an old lady selling a scallion pancake on the street with her son. Sometimes she needs to go out and buy her own food during the lunch hour time. The interesting part was she did not feel worried since she had the QR system payment at her stall. Whoever that stopped by at her stall to buy her scallion pancake, they just scanned the QR code system to do the payment without the need of her to be there the whole day. I was surprised when I watched the scene and I was wondering what if one day I will be able to see similarly for the case of Makcik Goreng Pisang as we call it here, she will use the same system like her in selling some fried banana on the street in Malaysia. Customers just need to scan the QR code to make the payment in case she is busy to attend all orders that has been made from her customers.

Furthermore, I noticed that in the drama series the QR code system is consistently being used in every aspect of services such as exchanging phone numbers with clients or customers. I was amazed with the trend of using this system. So, I did some readings online which I found that it can be suggested at as part of the system that use automation tools and one of them is the built-in QR code system in the mobile phones .The QR code system is a brilliant concept of new emergence of technology that has been developed for many years until just recently it has been used widely all over the world. This is one of examples of the fourth industrial revolution using the automation system. The other examples of the fourth industrial revolution can be referred to any forms of a breakthrough in technology world such as artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), automation system, 3-D printing, nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials science, energy storage, and quantum computing. When I recall the scene of that scallion pancake seller, I could say the world has transformed tremendously. Velocity is the word to describe it in this fast speed world. The automation tools like QR code has helped the scallion pancake seller of not losing any profit even she is not there for a while and she need not to worry that much about the system, it is accurate in calculation because it is a data-driven tool. Also, it has broaden the scope of sole proprietorship business industry people in operating their business with an integration of this breakthrough technology.

How about the impact? As we are marching towards the fourth industrial revolution, IT Infrastructure Automation Tools has become a must have tool for IT users in this modern times. It can be considered one of the high-tech invention in this coming age of revolutionized technology with an aim to replace the delayed manual process for IT task-based performance. Notably, this automation tool is created for users to carry out some IT tasks in any industries ranging from a small scale to a largest scale. For instance, the development of QR code system as an automate process in business sector is used to transfer the information automatically just with a scanning system. The demand for IT infrastructure automation system has gradually increased rapidly amongst the business owners in any industries due to its effectiveness in delivering their business operation. It is becoming the norm for them to switch most of their IT operations by integrating this new technologies for a smooth operation in their business. So, it is likely that they do not need to spend more on hiring people but instead they can just use the system to operate their business efficiently. It seems like a perfect and smooth operation but one question that has made me wonder in my thought. It is an inevitable dynamic period of time that we are actually live in. Everything moving in speed. Reset and pause. A simple question to ask ourselves, how ready are we to face it?
