THE PROBLEM

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally as well as in Malaysia. Globally, nearly 1 in 6 deaths is due to cancer. Meanwhile, in Malaysia, according to the recently published Malaysia National Cancer Registry Report 2007-2011, the risk of males getting cancer is 1 in 10 and for females is 1 in 9. Malaysians tend to avoid topics regarding cancer and ignore the fact that cancer can be treated and cured at a higher chance if it is detected at an early stage. The awareness of early detection and treatment on better survival rates is low among Malaysians. Cancer contributed 13.56% of all deaths in Malaysia in 2016 and most of the Malaysians have myths about cancer, one of that is there are no signs or symptoms for cancer. It's estimated that one in four Malaysians will develop cancer by 75 years old and 40% of these cancers are estimated to be preventable by avoiding risk factors such as tobacco and smoking, poor lifestyle, etc.

AIESEC in Taylor's University has designed this project to promote health via raising the awareness about cancer, the importance of early detection and the treatment involved in cancer by debunking the myth and perception. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that the project is SDG 3.4. In SDG 3.4, we target by 2030, reduce by one-third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.

THE SOLUTION

The project will be involving volunteers recruited by AIESEC in Taylor's University, cancer research center and secondary schools for the volunteers to have a workshop for the students.

1st - Train the Trainer (TtT)

Which aims to ensure that our volunteers receive sufficient knowledge and skill required to execute the project, understand more about impact assessment with the help our partners, National CancerSociety Malaysia (NCSM), Cancer Research Malaysia (CRM), Malaysian Association for Cancer Research (MACR)  and Taylor's Community.

2nd - Interaction with Cancer Warriors

National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) had provided the exchange participants with many opportunities such as delivering a training session and interaction with cancer fighters to gain more insight on cancer in Malaysia and cancer survivors. In the training, cancer knowledge and ways to detect early stages of cancer were delivered to the exchange participants.

3rd - Lab Visit

AISEC in Taylor’s University collaborated with Malaysian Association for Cancer Research for this project. Malaysian Association for Cancer Research had delivered a training session and took the global volunteers on a lab visit to gain more insight into cancer research. In the training, common types of cancer, prevention of cancer and introduction to cancer research were delivered to the global volunteers.  In the lab visit, the global volunteers were shown the current research on cancer and the equipment used for cancer

4th- Clinical Visit

The clinical visit was held in Hospital Kuala Lumpur. In this clinical visit, information on the treatment for cancer patients and medications and therapies for cancer were delivered to the global volunteers to gain more insight on cancer treatment

5th -   School Workshop

To raise awareness of cancer among high school students. Each workshop was 2 hours long and the activities that were carried out by the global volunteers were delivering a session about cancer, interactive games, sharing about cancer fighters and global volunteers sharing about their culture. A total of 210  students had participated in the workshop.

6th - Donation Drive

To raise awareness of cancer and raise funds for cancer research to sustain their organization.

7th - Global Village

Which aims to foster cultural exchange with the global volunteer showcasing their food, cultural elements from their home country.

THE IMPACT

The Here For You project is only 2 years old and it has already impacted a lot of volunteers, more than 200 of students, and 3 cancer research center which are National Cancer Society Malaysia, Cancer Research Malaysia and Malaysian Association for Cancer Research, and we wished that our volunteers get the correct resources about cancers to share it to more people and raising their awareness about cancer.

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in Taylor's University

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for the betterment of Malaysia.
