The Story

Greetings from the SOLS Health research team!

We're a bunch of data loving mental health enthusiasts, and our main role at SOLS Health is to use quality evidence to influence actions for positive change.

Our projects usually involve gathering information and crunching numbers, but (as the title suggests) we're looking to collect something different this time around....

The year has been one of drastic upheavals, thanks to the unprecendented pandemic.

Lockdowns and physical distancing have led to greater social isolation, loneliness, inactivity and limited access to services.

Working from home has blurred boundaries between work and rest, with jobs encroaching into personal lives. School closures have created additional stressors on families, with working parents to juggle roles, and children having to adapt to online learning. Those who do not have enough devices to spare, or who lack access to a stable Internet connection, are left behind.

The economic downturn has impacted job income and financial security. With businesses being forced to curtail operations, many people have either been forced out of work or experience significant income losses. Young graduates remain unemployed, facing diminished job prospects.

Against these shockwaves, many will be psychologically affected. COVID-19 has posed immediate challenges to health, but also tremendous psychological and emotional stressors caused by the uncertain and unpredictable circumstances.

Many are already struggling to cope emotionally, as evidenced by rising numbers of calls made to psychosocial support helplines and increasing reports of attempted suicide in recent months. Our own centre has experienced an increase in referrals and requests for counselling sessions.

Since the start of MCO, SOLS Health has continued to provide psychological care to its existing clients, while supporting the vulnerable and poor, through providing affordable mental health services and psychosocial support skills.

Now more than ever, we believe that mental health support should be accessible for all, not least those who have been most affected by the pandemic and who are struggling just to get by. By empowering people with skills and tools to build emotional resilience, more will be able to cope better, and navigate through challenges with fortitude.

If you would like to support us in delivering mental health support in these crucial times, please consider donating to this fundraising campaign. Every ringgit will be spent wisely, to respond to community needs, and create accessible mental health support for those in need of psychological care.

Thank you for helping us continue our cause!
