The Story

Felines and canines: Everyone had encountered these fluffy creatures. They are cute, adorable sometimes naughty but never wild. Special, is the right word to describe our little buddies. Pet owners would agree that they are an extension of themselves. Hence, taking care of them is of great importance. But, what about stray cats and dogs without owners?

Hello, my name is Jon Bonnar, a 20-years old student currently majoring in mechanical engineering at the Swinburne University of Technology. Like every other student, busy schedules kicks off when the academic semester begins. Regardless, I too wanted to explore and try out as many things as I could by doing non-academic related works. I have always been a believer in helping for a good cause no matter our age and status. This year, I had the chance to volunteer for the first-ever online volunteering project in Kuching organized by AIESEC.

This campaign is a collaboration between AIESEC and Zero Strays Miri (ZSM), a non-profitable organization based in Miri, Sarawak. The shelter currently houses 328 dogs of local breed rescued by the volunteers of the shelter. Some of these strays were heavily mistreated by their previous owners, only to end up being abandoned by the irresponsible owners. Currently, there are only a few volunteers who are active in running the shelter and taking care of these residents daily. They too are like us, working people with a job topped with extra commitments in taking care of these rescued strays especially during these trying times. These rescued strays yearn for a companionship, human beings that could take care of their welfare and someone for them to play with.

As the title suggests, how then can we help these strays? Understandably, everyone would love to help as much as they can so long as it is within their capabilities. With that in mind, these are some of the steps that you could do to help:

  1. Donating to my campaign above. I believe that by donating itself, you are already helping for a good cause even if it is just helping in the form of monetary value.
  2. Adopting the strays in the shelter through the adoption drive held to form the 10th of June to the 14th of June. You can help Zero Strays Miri (ZSM) to achieve their goal of having foster homes for these strays (and you, in turn, would have a great animal buddy to rely on and play with 😊).
  3. Sharing this link around with your connections. Sharing is a powerful form of action which helps in getting the word around.

Every donation made in this campaign will be contributed towards the animals’ welfare. Remember, that the volunteers in this shelter are not paid for their efforts in helping these animals. Hence, helping them in funds and other forms of assistance would really mean a lot to this organization.

For more information about this campaign, do approach me via email (jonbonnar6@gmail.com). Also, do check out Zero Strays Miri on these platforms to know more about their updates and upcoming events:

  1. Facebook: Zero Strays Miri
  2. Website: https://zerostraysmiri.wixsite.com/zerostraysmiri/services2

Your help and the effort in contribution would really be much appreciated. Remember, that we all should play our parts in helping the society as much as we could. Thank you for your time and effort 😊.
