Hi I'm Cindy and I'm pleased to be connected with you. I would describe myself currently as a mental health advocate and mindfulness practitioner, and I am passionate about creating safe spaces for people to discover themselves and realise their true potential.
As I journeyed through my life (now spanning over three decades), I began to appreciate the wonders of simple things that I previously have taken forgranted. For example, I used to be so caught up in scoring As and winning badminton competitions, I forgot that I live in a house with close family support and lots of space to breathe and walk around safely. Recently I also found the wonders in waking up to birds chirping and the fresh morning air breeze.
I obtained a scholarship to study Mathematics and Economics at a prestigious university in London and did well, winning the Department prize as best overall student for my batch. I then worked in the Central Bank of Malaysia which many consider to be a good stable job with meaningful contritbutions to the nation. And I admit I learnt so much from my time there.
Yet... I felt something amiss. I felt out of touch with myself. I felt out of touch with people around me. I could only connect on a surface level, and many things were thought out logically in my head, not felt in my heart.
Thus began my journey within, of connecting to my feelings, to my body, to my mind. Getting to know myself and with that, forging a more authentic relationship not only with myself but also with people around me. I began to see new perspectives. Perspectives that previously I would just judge (e.g. ah she's just lazy, oh poor thing...).. Now I see with eyes and hearts that are more open, more understanding. I realise the many things I am so ignorant about, and that I have been living a very privileged life all the while.
Thus bringing me to this campaign. Why am I fundraising for this campaign?
My journey after seven years in the central bank brought me to an NGO called SOLS Health. It was something unexpected. At that point I was on a career break and I received a text message from a senior asking me if I would be interested to volunteer with a mental health NGO since I was interested in this field. One thing led to another and I have now been at SOLS Health for almost two years now.
It has been a practical learning journey for me throughout this time. I gained exposure to a variety of settings, and people from various backgrounds. I am humbled each time I meet people, ranging from parents, children, community leaders, survivors of domestic violence. I cannot imagine how life would be like to be in a state of constant fear and confusion. To not feel safe at home, and to have nowhere to go sometimes. Unsure what to do, and unsure what the future may bring.
The BRAVE team at SOLS Health provides the women and children domestic violence survivors a safe space - a space to be themselves and allow the difficult feelings and emotions to be processed. For some of them, the trauma has been in their bodies for many years and need time to be released and processed safely, with people whom they can trust and not hold them with judgment. This is where we hope to support them, to walk with them through this journey, towards a better brighter more fulfilling life.
My target is to raise RM8,888 for this campaign, as this would help support a long-term project and recovery process for the survivors. Your contribution goes a long way to making this project more sustainable and bring benefit to the community.
Thank you for your kind consideration.
