The Story

My name is Leoniek, and I am a clinical psychologist and academic from the Netherlands. My husband’s career has brought our family to Singapore and, since July 2019, to Malaysia. I joined SOLS Health as a clinical consultant in August 2019 and have not regretted it once. Much of my work at SOLS Health focuses on capacity building, and battling the stigma surrounding mental health. I conduct research, offer clinical supervision to clinical psychologists in training and conduct talks on mental health.

The team at SOLS Health is ambitious, hardworking and truly makes an impact despite the many challenges. The stigma surrounding mental health can be very strong at times. Financial resources are tight, the public mental health system is seriously overburdened and there are only relatively few clinical psychologists and psychiatrists available. Despite all this, I am proud and grateful to say that we are successfully reaching the unreached. We bring mental health care to disadvantaged communities through our KAMI program and provide subsidized treatment to children and adults who could otherwise not afford it. And last but not least, we are introducing trauma informed care in a shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their children through our BRAVE program.

I am very passionate about the BRAVE program. Unfortunately, traumatic experiences such as domestic violence, neglect or sexual abuse, are highly common in Malaysia. Extensive research from overseas shows the detrimental effects of adverse childhood experiences on the physical, emotional and social development of children. When trauma goes unnoticed and untreated, it has a lifelong negative impact. Educating front line workers about how widespread trauma is and its impact, and training them to recognize signs and symptoms, will make a difference in many lives! Developing the BRAVE program and training frontline workers have been part of my main tasks over the past few months, and it has been very rewarding to see changes happen and the direct impact on the survivors and their children.

If you would like to support me and my colleagues in delivering the BRAVE program, please donate to this fundraising campaign. I know every ringgit will be spend wisely and will directly benefit the ones who are in need of psychological care. Terima Kasih & Thank you for helping us Reaching the Unreached!
