My name is Yasmine and I am an intern with SOLS Health - a non-profit organisation that provides affordable mental health services to the community with the emphasis on combating the stigma of mental health in Malaysia.
Besides of learning on how the centre operates and exploring the mental health field, I also have the opportunity to have a session with a therapist in SOLS Health to experience on how is it like to be a client. To me, I always thought that you should see a therapist only when you feel distressed. However, after having a session with my therapist, I realised that instead of hoping to "solve" your problem, the session helped me to learn more of myself- such as my career path and setting realistic goal that I want to achieve in life. Besides, I've also learnt some useful relaxation techniques to practice whenever I feel stressed.
So far my experience in SOLS Health was good especially when I was able to be part of the team for SOLS Health fundraising campaign. Through this experience, I have learnt more about the adverse effects of domestic violence have on an individual and the importance of implementing proper interventions. To me, this fundraising campaign is different from those I did before in school and university. This campaign is far more impactful because it help survivors to rebuild their lives and raise mental health awareness at the same time. By looking at these worrying statistics (1 out of 10 women and 4 out of 10 children in Malaysia are going through domestic violence), I feel blessed for being able to grow up in safe and supportive environment without worrying the basic needs in life.
A small amount donated makes a big difference on other's life. In 2020, join me in supporting this meaningful cause!
