THE PROBLEM

Having a family is supposed to be a blissful adventure but it was sadly not the case for Siti *false name- identity protected* and her four teenage children. She had been subjected to domestic violence since the start of her marriage from her husband who was fond of beating her with a wooden stick, slamming her against the wall, kicking, and punching her. To make matters worse, not only did her children grow up to witness her being physically, emotionally, and verbally abused, they also became direct victims. They grew up in constant fear as their dad who was an alcohol addict would occasionally beat them with a rubber hose and cane.

  • It is unfortuante the 1 out of 10 women and 4 out of 10 children in Malaysia are currently going through similar violence meted out to Siti and her children.
  • Despite being foruntate to receive first-stage help with alternative shelter, basic financial support, and legal aid, it is extremely difficult for them to move on to rebuild their lives.
  • The trauma that the mother and children experienced from the domestic violence continued to haunt and negatively affect their mental health which hindered them from progression in life as they would want to.

The children became timid, withdrawn, aggressive, and used anger to resolve conflicts as 3 out of 10 women in Malaysia who experienced or witnessed domestic violence usually become. They drastically underperformed in school, had frequent nightmares as 2 out of 10 abused children would, and they are 1.5 times more likely to abuse drugs in adulthood as survivors of child abuse tend to do. The lives of these children are already crippling before they even become adults. The mother, who incurred severe injuries from the abuse and was hospitalized, had also internalized and suppressed emoitional pain for a long time just as her children. This affected her ability to move on and live a normal life again. Just as it is for children, women survivors of domestic violence also go through a lot of emotions - fear, confusion, anger, or even numbness. They often experience mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic disorder.

  • Neither the mother nor children could move on with their lives, hustle, and function well. Statistics show that Selangor has the highest number of domestic violence cases (about 1 in 4 reported cases) with anger, misunderstandings, and drug addiction attributed as leading causes.

THE SOLUTION

  • To kick start the process of provision of mental health services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence by funding therapy sessions and support programmes to aid in their recovery process.
  • Our services are targeted to women and children survivors in the Klang Valley under the BRAVE programme (Building Resilience, Acceptance, Valiance, and Empowerment).
  • Through the BRAVE programme, we hope to create a safe space for survivors of domestic violence develop the skills and knowledge, restore courage and rebuild parent-child familial relationship to move on their new lives after the traumatic experience.

THE IMPACT

1 Family: RM4,000 - 10 therapy sessions for mother and 10 therapy session for children.

  • The funds from this campaign will be used to enable 15 families who have been victims of domestic violence to receive mental health services under the BRAVE Programme by Jan 2020.

With the help of psychological assessments, therapy, and counselling, Siti and her children were able to release their suppressed feelings, recover well, and are now able to move on with their lives with confidence.

  • All of Siti's children have started to show more interest towards their studies and are very involved in co-curricular activities at school. Two of them even became prefects in their new school and secured a place in the top-performing class.
  • The husband who inflicted the domestic violence on Siti and her children grew up in an abusive home. Without proper mental health intervention, domestic violence can have intergenerational consequences as witnesses or victims of domestic violence tend to repeat and inflict similar abuse to others.

Help us to help 15 families recover from the violence they’ve suffered so that they can move on with their lives and also prevent them from inflicting violence on others.

Donate to Help Women and Children Domestic Violence Survivors Recover Well and Move on with their Lives
21-APR-2020
We want to thank every donor for the incredible support of our campaign until now. The campaign was supposed to finish on the 31st of March. Although because of the Movement Control Order our families are unable to come to their appointments, which means a big interruption on their therapy too. So we decided to maintain the campaign open for 1 more month. So that when we will be able to proceed with the BRAVE program, we can support even more families with your help. MYR 20,000 more to reach the target we planned to support these women and children with important mental health therapy. We humbly request the last help. Thank you with all our hearts!

4-MAY-2020
Due to the increase in domestic violence cases during the MCO, we will need to prepare our clinical team to receive referrals from other NGOs and would like to extend our current fundraising until 30 June. Continue to provide support. Thank you!

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

SOLS Health

SOLS Health is a behavioural health centre that connects clients to accessible individual, family and community mental health and nutritional services with an emphasis on combating the stigma of mental health in Malaysia. We believe that behavioural health is one of the most critical determinants to physical health, personal wellness and good quality of life. We exist because we believe that there is no health without mental health.
