THE PROBLEM

The following is an example of a child sexual abuse case. Please note that this story is not based on any real event or character.

When A* was 9 years old, he was sexually abused by his tuition teacher who lived next door. A* had asked his tuition teacher for assistance on a school project. They agreed to meet up at the teacher’s house, where A* noticed that they were alone. The situation did not bother him as his only aim was to complete his school project. While he worked, his teacher surprised him by touching him inappropriately. His teacher then forced A* to perform oral sex on him. This abuse continued for another five years and included violent rape and forced masturbation. As is the case with many child sexual abuse survivors, the perpetrator manipulated and terrified A*, telling him that no one would believe A* if he told anybody. The grooming process also played its role in maintaining secrecy. The abuse affected him profoundly. His grades slipped and he became withdrawn and depressed. His other teachers noticed that he was struggling, but never thought to inquire as to why his upbeat and enthusiastic behavior had turned to depression and disengagement. It was not that A* did not want to seek help. He desperately wanted to tell someone what was happening, but he was afraid that no one would trust him. A* also felt very shameful and he was scared of being rejected by society as he was now ‘dirty’. At the age of 14, A* was finally brave enough to take the first step and disclose his abuse to a P.S. The Children staff member during their personal safety program (KMS) that was conducted in his school.

One in four girls and one in six boys under the age of 18 have experienced some form of sexual abuse. Inevitably, the social stigma that surrounds the topic of sexual abuse as well as the lack of law enforcement worsens the situation. The number of child sexual abuse cases has escalated, and these are only the reported cases- the tiny tip of a huge iceberg.

Currently, Protect and Save the Children (P.S. the Children) is the sole organisation in Malaysia that provides services to child sexual abuse survivors and their families in 4 pillars; intervention, prevention, rehabilitation and advocacy. P.S. the Children survives purely on the kindness of public individuals and occasionally, corporate contributions to continue our services to the children and the public.

THE SOLUTION

The effect of sexual abuse can vary for each child. However, the incident can lead to a damaging impact for the survivor and their family. Longer-term traumatization can lead to anxiety, depression, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that continues into adulthood. Being able to provide therapy to a survivor at a tender age will help them to express the pain from the trauma they are facing, and manage their anxiety.

Funds are essential and in need for:

  1. Travel expenses to intervene and support survivors of child sexual abuse and their family through the reporting process.

  2. Provide therapy for children and adults who have been sexually abused.

THE IMPACT

Therapy is not about fixing. It is about healing, expressing and reintegration. It is a process that allows survivors to face the past and move forward to the future.

An amount of RM10,000, will allow us to support FIVE SURVIVORS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE through the intervention and healing process.

As a token of appreciation, P.S. the Children is willing to do a talk on prevention of child sexual abuse for you and your community, along with tax-exemption receipts on request.

Please help the children.

Please contribute to the cause.
