THE PROBLEM

Quality of education is a foundation of the development of society and as a developing nation, Malaysia is in need of a strong and sustainable education system to equip its young citizens with knowledge, values and skills for more life opportunities. While the Malaysian population that has received high education has grown throughout the years, Malaysian students are failing behind their peers in the country's regional neighbours. English proficiency and STEM knowledge are two important factors of employability in the 21st century. English is hugely important as an international language and it plays an important part for a person's success.  STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National Science Foundation)

In order to increase the number of young Malaysians with the necessary skills for employment in today's world, the Malaysian education system needs to resolve the following issues:
1.) Students' low English proficiency level due to quality of national English language education.
2.) Students' subpar performance in applying science and mathematics knowledge.
3.) Gap in education quality between states and within states across Malaysia.

THE SOLUTION

The project consists of several components for both secondary school students and global volunteers.

1- Train the Trainer (TtT)

Which aims to equip our volunteers with enough knowledge and skills when we are engaging and teaching students English with the kind help of our Partners Teach For Malaysia (TFM).

2 - School Workshops

Which aim to raise awareness on the importance of English Speaking and STEM education to boost up students’ confidence in speaking English and ignite their interest in STEM subjects.with interactive activities.

3 - Action Initiative Planning

Which aims to evaluate the project deliverables and impacts, and to ensure the sustainability of our impacts even the projects have ended with the school teachers, global volunteers and our committees.

4 - Global Village

Which aims to foster cultural exchange with the global volunteer showcasing their food, cultural elements from their home country.

THE IMPACT

Speak Up has been reached more than 800 Global Volunteers, 160 Secondary Schools and 2,200 Secondary Students. More than 83% of these stakeholders have ranked our project with a score of 8 out of 10, and more than 76% of the Secondary Students have ranked themselves more confident in using English for daily interaction with peers (7 out of 10), some of them even become the Committee of the Toastmaster Club which reveals that what Speak Up brings to them is not just about short-term change but a long-term impact.

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in Curtin University Malaysia

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for a betterment of Malaysia.
