THE PROBLEM

As a refugee in the country,  it was very difficult for refugee children to have quality education. Due to their refugee status, these children cannot attend schools and are therefore forced to make do with whatever limited resources they might have. Most attend schools which are sponsored by non-governmental organizations and even then, many times there are simply not enough available resources to provide all the children with their most basic needs. The children have no access to formal education, no legal or administrative frameworks in place in the country to address the refugee situation and no fixed teachers in refugee centres thus they do not have a proper education.

AIESEC in Taylor's University has designed this project to increase the education level of the refugees, and at the same time empower them to believe and have faith that they can still do something more with their life.

THE SOLUTION

The project consists of several components for both refugee children and the global volunteer. In this project, we will recruit volunteers to teach the children in the refugee centre English and Mathematics.

1st - Train the Trainer (TtT)

Which aims to ensure that our volunteers receive sufficient educational support, in terms of teaching and managing children and understand more about impact assessment with the help of our partners, School of Education in Taylor's University and Taylor's Community.

2nd - Project Developmental Space

In this space, the volunteers will prepare the teaching materials and exercises before they teach the children in the refugee centre. The volunteers will also discuss the execution of teaching.  Thus, in this space, the exchange participants will prepare themselves before teaching the children.

3rd - Teaching at the refugee centre

Throughout the 6 weeks, the volunteers will teach the children on the subjects, English and Mathematics, and small tests will be given to ensure that the children understand the teaching. Meanwhile,  the volunteers will also share their cultures from their country to the children.

4th- Donation Drive

The volunteers set up a booth at the mall or university to have a fundraising event for the refugee centre so that the centre is able to sustain. During the donation drive, the volunteers will sell arts and crafts like bookmarks designed by the refugee children.

5th - Global Village

Which aim to foster cultural exchange with the global volunteers showcasing their food, cultural elements from their home country.

THE IMPACT

Light A Refugee's Dream has impacted more than 80 global volunteers, 4 refugee centres, 100 of refugee children. Through the project, the children showed improvement in getting a better understanding of what they are learning and the children also improved the test marks too. Most of our stakeholders ranked this project 8 out of 10 and we believe that this project can impact more and more children by providing them with a quality education

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in Taylor's University

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for the betterment of Malaysia.
