THE PROBLEM

Pet abandonment is a common social issue worldwide and has become increasingly higher in Malaysia. Pet shelters are currently being overwhelmed, the number of strays on the streets is also increasing day by day. With this large increase in numbers, we notice that the public has a very low awareness regarding the problems faced by these strays as well as how to approach and help these animals. The pet shelters with their limited capacity are not able to cater and give the best home to the strays they adopt.

AIESEC in Taylor's University has designed this project, to conserve animal rights and increase awareness about it.

THE SOLUTION

The project will be involving volunteers recruited by AIESEC in Taylor's University, animal shelters and secondary schools for the volunteers to have a workshop for the students.

1st - Train the Trainer (TtT)

This aims to ensure that our volunteers receive sufficient knowledge and skill required to execute the project, in terms of helping out in the animal shelter and understand more about impact assessment with the help of our partners, PAWS Animal Welfare Society and Taylor's Community.

2nd - Educational Planning Sessions

In this space, the exchange participants will discuss and prepare themselves for the school workshop and donation drive. For the school workshop, the exchange participants plan games for ice-breaking session and brainstorm topics to present. For donation drive,  they practice how to pitch to the public, brainstorm ideas on how to attract people to the booth such as putting up posters that the students from the secondary school drew, designing and printing bookmarks, and designing a digital poster.

3rd - Volunteering in the Animal Shelter

Throughout the 6 weeks, the volunteers will be at the animal shelter to learn to take care of animals, understanding their behaviors, treatment process, develop educational materials. Education on Capture, Neuter, and Release process.

4th - School Workshop

To raise awareness of animal rights among high school students. Each workshop was 3 hours long and the activities that were carried out by the global volunteers.

5th - Donation Drive

The volunteers set up a booth at the mall or university to have a fundraising event for the animal shelter so that the center is able to sustain. During the donation drive, merchandise from PAWS Animal Welfare Society was sold along with bookmarks made by the volunteers. They also conduct adoption information and volunteering recruitment during the donation drive.

6th - Global Village

Which aims to foster cultural exchange with the global volunteer showcasing their food, cultural elements from their home country.

THE IMPACT

PAW- Awareness has impacted a lot of volunteers, even though the project only executed for 3 years. The project has impacted 2 high schools, more than 100+ of students, more 50 dogs, and cats have a new home and more people are aware of the condition. The animal shelter ranked our project 10 out of 10, because of the impacts that we brought.

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in Taylor's University

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for the betterment of Malaysia.
