THE PROBLEM

Aspire to bring awareness of pursuing tertiary education, religious enhancement, and community engagement, MISI Club IIUM will kick off 2019 with another community engagement project named Outreach to Kampung Subak, Bekenu, Miri, Sarawak (Bedudun) Series 1 from 12th to 21st January 2019. Bedudun means “visit” in Kedayan language.

Most of the villagers of Kg Subak are Muslims but according to the mosque chairman, the understanding and practice of the religion require attention. In fact, they are keen to learn but probably, do not have accessible resources. As far as education goes, the youths are not exposed to the importance of pursuing tertiary education. We do not have the exact number of how many school leavers actually choose to pursue tertiary education, but according to one of our committees there, it is close to none.

THE SOLUTION

Engaging with the community by adopting the foster family plan, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the culture and their perspective on religion and education. Our modules will be centered around religious enhancement, higher education as well as engaging with the community. We will be having Quran recitation, congregational prayers everyday, fast for a day with the villagers and slots for understanding the fundamental of Islam in terms of theory and practice. We will visit a high school nearby to carry out the second agenda-- education. Exposing them to university life and the pathway to achieving their dreamed career might instill hope for them in pursuit of knowledge.

THE IMPACT

If the modules are successful, we hope to see that the villagers would practice the correct teachings of Islam and live by it. It will also reduce the gap between themselves and have more social activities together. On the other hand, we hope that the community, in general, would realize the importance of knowledge and the youths would start aiming to further their study after finishing secondary school. Having a strong support system for the children matters most especially coming from such background where tertiary education is not seen as an option after leaving high school. We aim to have at least one of the students in the high school that we will visit, would apply for tertiary education and offered a place in a university. This will be a great beginning.
