THE PROBLEM

Campaign details

‘Light Your Future, Eureka!’, in short, LYFE is a six weeks' social project started by AIESEC in University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC). It is one of the 4 social projects carried out in AIESEC in UNMC as part of the projects based on exchange (PBoX) department. LYFE aims to provide Malaysia’s youth with the right awareness of career paths from beginning to the end, through cultivating necessary soft skills knowledge and developing self-reflection.

The project planning involves university students of AIESEC in UNMC while the project execution involves youth volunteers recruited from all around the world.

The Problem

Majority of young individuals find it difficult to decide from a variety of career choices available after their studies. Without proper guidance and career awareness, they are bound to make choices that do not reflect their preference and potential in the chosen field. Moreover, according to a study conducted by the Ministry of Education Malaysia's Graduate Tracer Study in 2018, 51,000 graduates are produced each year from the 21 public-sector universities and 38 private-sector universities in Malaysia, however, 60% remain unemployed one year after graduation. Facing this increasing competition, soft skills, paired with solid credentials will be able to highlight the graduates’ potential to grow beyond their role and thus increasing their employability.

The initiative of this project is in concordance to the 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) which is to increase the number of youths and adults who have relevant skills, for employment, decent jobs, and entrepreneurship. By focusing on this goal, the project is conducted to ensure Malaysia's young generation will develop the right attitude and passion for their career to improve themselves and Malaysia's stand in the world.

THE SOLUTION

The project consists of several components for both secondary school students and the global volunteers.

 1st – Learning Partner session

Ensure volunteers are equipped with presentation, teaching & coaching skills.

 2nd – LYFE workshops

Ensure the students understand the importance of soft skills and develop them along the way.

 3rd – LYFE conference

Ensure students have a clear understanding of career pathways, global opportunities and ways to plan their future strategically.

4th – Versatility Camp

Ensure students have a correct expectation towards career fields through interactive activities, self-reflection and industrial visit.

 5th – Global Village

Aims to foster cultural exchange within the global volunteers through showcasing their unique culture.

THE IMPACT

During the 2018/2019 winter peak, we were able to reach out to 20 international volunteers from China, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Taiwan, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, under the programme of AIESEC Global Volunteer (GV) in making the project successful. The activities carried out were also able to bring positive impact on the targeted high school students:

1)    Improved confidence towards their future career pathways

Survey questionnaires were distributed after the workshop based on the specific pre-university programme they wish to pursue and 40.6% of the delegates reported to have gained confidence in their future career after the workshop.

 2)    Increased awareness of the importance of soft skills in their career

Survey questionnaires were distributed after the workshop based on their understanding of soft skills and it was reported that the percentage of students that understand the importance of soft skills were raised from 36.4% to 71.9%.

 3)    Increased awareness towards various career fields

Survey questionnaires were distributed after the workshop based on the students’ rating on their understanding of career types and it was reported that the average score was increased from 6.25 to 8.0.

*data were collected from LYFE project’s summer realisation held in 2019

About the Organization/Project behind this Campaign

AIESEC in University of Nottingham Malaysia

Our Identity

AIESEC is the world's largest non-profit youth-run organization. It is an international non-governmental not-for-profit organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural global internships, and volunteer exchange experiences across the globe. The organization focuses on empowering young leaders to make a positive impact on society through actions.

Our Vision

AIESEC strives for Peace and Fulfilment of Humankind's Potential as an organisation.

In today’s context, ‘Peace’ does not necessarily mean only avoiding war. Peace can symbolise a world that does not have conflicts that arise from cultural, religious, or other aspects of differences in humanity. Peace can also symbolise being in harmony with yourself. AIESEC strives to build a world where people can work towards their own understanding of peace while respecting and understanding the views of others.

Through Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential, AIESEC strives for a world where people can be the best version of themselves.

Our Action

We place our confidence in youth because they have the passion, dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit that are needed to shape the future. They have the responsibility to improve tomorrow by choosing who they will be today. Hence, AIESEC is a platform for young leaders to run projects that are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure its relevance to the local community needs. We aim to be part of the solution for a betterment of Malaysia.
