[HWUM x EcoKnights] Clean Our Plate! Cooking Oil for Cleaning (C4C)

THE PROBLEM

Clean Our Plate, in short, COP is a six weeks social project started by AIESEC in Malaysia 2016. Being one of the three national projects organised by AIESEC in Malaysia, COP aims to work upon the vision of increasing awareness, changing attitudes and initiate easy actions for youth towards reducing preventable food waste & fully utilizing food waste while influencing their peers and their household.

The Problem

The disposal of used cooking oil into sinks, drains and rivers leads to some of our drainage challenges such as river pollution, clogged drainage systems and flash floods. To address this issue, it boils down to proper disposal of oil that should be practiced by all communities. However, many communities are not fully exposed to the proper methods and channels in ensuring their cooking oil is disposed of properly.

THE SOLUTION

In collaboration with EcoKnights, AIESEC in Heriot-Watt will run a collection drive with a community or general public for used cooking oil and conduct training in up cycling the oil into household soaps for the participating community or individuals. We intend to be part of the enabler to connect the community to the organisation in hopes of striving to empower the B40 community. As of September 2019, EcoKnights has managed to collect at least 1000 litres of used cooking oil to be upcycled.

THE IMPACT

Goal 1 - Provision of tools and setup of collection area for the beneficiaries to collect used cooking oil. Amount Needed: MYR400.00
