THE PROBLEM

Hi! We are students of SMK Parit Panjang.

This year, we designed and implemented our “How to Manage It – Disadvantages of Used Cooking Oil” initiative in our school as part of the Design for Change ‘I Can” School Challenge to develop social impact projects using the simplified design thinking methodology of Feel-Imagine-Do-Share (FIDS).

The Challenge aims to develop impact-driven, socially conscious, self-confident and globally-competent Malaysian students.

Did you know that the use of cooking oil in preparing sauteed or fried dishes should be limited in daily cooking? Especially if the oil used has been used repeatedly. This is because during the frying process, cooking oil releases toxic waste called aldehydes which pollutes the air and can enter the human respiratory system. As a result, there are serious health problems such as liver disease, heart disease, atherosclerosis (clogged blood vessels due to becoming hard and thick), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, and cancer.

According to the 2016 pollution study statistics by Universiti Islam Sains Malaysia, every household uses a minimum of 2 kilograms of cooking oil per month while 45% of unused oil will be discarded. It is also known that the widespread dumping of cooking oil into the sink can cause clogged drainage systems and encourage the reproduction of pests such as rats and cockroaches. This indirectly becomes a breeding ground for pests that will affect the health of the population.

THE SOLUTION

How To Manage Used Cooking Oil?

1. Submit to the available party to provide oil recycling services What do you mean by throwing used cooking oil in an area that can cause pollution, it is better if you sell it to the relevant parties, right? For example, selling to Tahfiz Al-Hira Academy and Sentosa Youth Club in Batang Kali or at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for the purpose of biodiesel production. You get money, nature is protected from pollution.

2. Collect in a bottle If you feel lazy to resell the used oil, you can collect the oil back in empty bottles and dispose of in the recycling area. Later the authorities such as the Municipal Council will manage the waste.

3. Recycle yourself If you are a creative type and like to DIY, you can try to see on the internet how to produce oil-based materials. In fact, from used cooking oil you can produce the simplest ingredients, namely soap, biodiesel and wax. Believe it or not?

THE IMPACT

We have chosen to produce soap based on our facilities. Evidence from our project can show that used cooking oil can be used as an ingredient to create other product. This soap that has been made from used oil is proven to be safe and can be used as a detergent.

Therefore through the soap making tutorial that we produce can be used as a reference to all communities to produce their own soap at home. Through innovation and creativity the production of form and aroma to the production of soap can be sold and marketed as an income to us. We will develop a machine to facilitate the process of making soap faster and more. We hope that our efforts will be a role model for all communities. Take care your health and environment.

“We do not inherit this earth from our ancestors, but instead we only borrow from our grandchildren so it is important to take care of the environment which is the responsibility of every human being, society or population living on earth”
