THE PROBLEM

Hi! We are students of SK Desa Cempaka.

This year, we led designed and implemented our “Brain Breaks Box” initiative in our school as part of the Design for Change ‘I Can” School Challenge to develop social impact projects using the simplified design thinking methodology of Feel-Imagine-Do-Share (FIDS).

The Challenge aims to develop impact-driven, socially conscious, self-confident and globally-competent Malaysian students.

Once we submitted the project to the ‘I Can’ School Challenge, we sought out a company who was already interested to help out with our project. We met up with the executive director of KA Petra Sdn. Bhd., Datin Lelawati binti Mohd Raffik, and a few others of the company’s officers and presented on our idea of the Brain Breaks Box. This included what the Brain Breaks Box is, what it aims to achieve, its benefits as well as how it will be used in classes. The company representatives present were fond of the idea and agreed that it was a good innovation to help overcome the problem of sitting for too long during school hours. So, they agreed to fund the production of more Brain Breaks Boxes; one for every class in our school and even some to be given to other schools to employ in their classes.

Our next move was to use the funds to purchase and prepare materials for the Brain Breaks Boxes, however due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, the state education department issued a letter restricting movement of pupils for any extra-curricular activities. This not only put our production process to a stop, it also caused problems for us in sharing our idea with other schools and the community at large. Today, we are faced with yet another problem: the closure of all schools and learning institutions in our district. Again, due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus. So, we are stumped on how to produce more Brain Breaks Boxes and how we are to share the concept of the Brain Breaks Box to others.

THE SOLUTION

In keeping up with the new norms, we have decided to go online! We’re pressing pause on the production, but we will definitely move forward with the sharing of our Brain Breaks Box to other schools and the community. We will share more info on social media platforms. This will include all our personal social media accounts on Instagram and Twitter, our YouTube channels as well as the school Facebook page. We also plan to host online conferences with teachers of other schools, education officers and parents via Google Meet.

Once schools recommence, we will continue to produce more Brain Breaks Boxes. The priority would be to complete the production for every class. If the pupils’ movements are still restricted by that time, the teachers will do the purchasing of materials while the pupils will do what they can in school. Another alternative for the Brain Breaks Box would be for the use of parents at home. As students still have to learn from home, they could still employ brain breaks in between learning tasks.

THE IMPACT

We think that the Brain Breaks Box is necessary, especially now, since we have to sit for long hours during school. Brain Break activities can be active or relaxing and they often focus on physical movement, mindfulness and sensory activities. Most importantly, these activities are short. So, it won’t take too much time off learning. Brain breaks will also benefit overall health and wellness because it promotes physical movement. These breaks can also help boost pupils’ attention and motivation to learn. While conducting sessions in class, we noticed that the pupils enjoyed the activities carried out using the Brain Breaks Box. Many pupils said that it energized them and gave them the motivation to learn after the activities. Hence, the most prominent benefit is that these brain breaks will give pupils the energy and motivation to keep learning despite having to sit for so long during school.

It is also helpful for teachers in schools because the instructions and materials are provided in the brain breaks box, so teachers don’t need to rack their brains, thinking of activities to be done in the classroom or preparing materials to be used. Besides that, to make the Brain Breaks Box possible, we only needed a budget of RM14 per box. It’s very economical and easy to replicate so other schools that may be interested in the idea of having brain breaks could easily make one on their own!
